One person is dead and nine others are wounded after a shooting at a large Juneteenth celebration in Anderson.

The Anderson County Office of the Coroner said authorities were called to a report of multiple people shot along Scarborough Road around 10 p.m. on Saturday, June 21.

First responders arrived at a “chaotic scene,” with people running away and multiple individuals injured, according to the coroner.

Laporshia Janae Gray Cobb, 35, was pronounced dead at the scene by EMS. Two other people were severely injured, and seven others were treated for gunshot wounds to their extremities, the coroner said. Many victims transported themselves to the hospital.

In a Sunday afternoon press release, the Anderson County Sheriff’s Office said it had pinpointed persons of interest in the case.

The incident occurred during a Juneteenth celebration attended by hundreds, and the sheriff’s office said the event had remained peaceful throughout the day.

“However, as more people arrived, an argument ensued in the parking lot, and multiple shots were fired, with people scrambling throughout the area,” the sheriff’s office said.

More than 100 law enforcement officers, EMS personnel, firefighters, and other officials responded to the scene after hundreds of people scattered, leaving behind shoes and debris in the roadway, according to the sheriff’s office.

Detectives remained at the scene Sunday morning to canvass the area and interview witnesses.
