The Emancipation Proclamation, which abolished slavery on paper, went into effect on Jan. 1, 1863. But Juneteenth refers to June 19, 1864, the day enslaved people in Galveston, Texas, learned they were free.

Juneteenth has been celebrated ever since, but it didn’t become a federal holiday until 2021, when then-President Joe Biden signed the Juneteenth National Independence Day Act.
