This weekend, the Juneteenth Ohio Festival spotlights the rich and varied heritage of Black Americans while also promoting cultural unity and ethnic diversity. As stated on the festival website, these integral elements “improve the relationships and quality of life among all residents throughout Ohio.”

The festival commemorates the day that enslaved people in Galveston, Texas, learned they were free — June 19, 1865, or “Juneteenth” — and true to its mission of unity, it traditionally kicks off with a drum call for peace.

The Juneteenth Ohio Festival offers music galore, along with food, a college and career fair, classic car show and numerous other attractions. The fest is set for Saturday and Sunday in Genoa Park. Admission is free until 3 p.m., then costs $20 for adults and $5 for children.
