The Pump House Center for the Arts will host four events during June. According to an announcement, the events will celebrate Juneteenth in Chillicothe, featuring art, music and educational opportunities.
The first event is an annual art show showcasing artist/author Carlos Walker from Halifax County, Virginia. Walker, who began drawing at age 8, faced significant challenges in his life. After serving 13 years of a 20-year sentence, he returned to art, curating five exhibitions while incarcerated. His notable work, “Walk a Mile In Our Shoes,” reflects the African American experience from slavery to the present. Walker has sold over 10,200 books, including artwork created during his time in prison. His art will be displayed alongside local artists aged 16 and older at the Pump House from June 3 to June 28. The opening reception is set for 6:30 to 8 p.m. on June 5.
The second event is the Juneteenth Art Contest for Ross County School students in grades six-12. This judged contest will award monetary prizes in two categories: grades six to eight and grades 9-12. Students are encouraged to create artwork inspired by Black inventors, either depicting the inventor or their invention. Submissions will be accepted from May 28 to June 1. The awards program will take place 6:30 to 8 p.m. on June 13. Schools with winning students will also receive awards for art supplies.
Final two events feature music and more
The third event is a Jazz and Blues concert at the Majestic Theater on June 6, starting at 6 p.m. The concert will feature performances by Yoctangee Fire from Chillicothe, the RT Project from Columbus, and the Brett Hitman Barnard Blues Band from Savannah, Georgia. Tickets are priced at $30 and can be purchased online through the Majestic Theater’s website.
The final event, Art In The Streets, will take place on June 6 from 5 to 9 p.m. on East Second Street between Paint Street and the Majestic Theater. This event will include art displays, music and activities. Artists can participate for a booth fee of $75 for selling or $50 for display only.
Portions of these events are funded by the Ohio Arts Council and local donors, including the Ross-Chillicothe Convention and Visitors Bureau, American Legion – Ross County Post 62 and and FLUOR-BWXT, Portsmouth.
