HATTIESBURG, Miss. (WDAM) – The Hattiesburg Juneteenth Festival is coming up this weekend.
The event will kick off Saturday with a parade at 9 am.
The parade will end at Vernon Dahmer Park, where the festival will start at 11 a.m.
Vendors, games, swimming and live entertainment are on the schedule.
The night will end with a firework show around 8:30 pm.
Hattiesburg City Councilman Nick Brown said Saturday will mark the festival’s 42nd year.
“It’s just important to remember what our ancestors went through to get to where we are today,” said Brown. “We’ve come a long way. We’ve still got a lot to go. But it’s a great thing to do and to celebrate. Just to remember what our ancestors had to endure.
“They went through a lot, being enslaved, and we just want to keep the legacy of our ancestors alive and just keep celebrating each year our freedom.”
The Hattiesburg Juneteenth festival was started by Marian Reed in 1983.
