Check out Pride celebrations in Lawrenceville and Millvale, see a Juneteenth performance or check out DinoFest at the Carnegie Museum of Natural History — here’s what to do in Pittsburgh this weekend.
Public Pools
Allegheny County opened its public pools and spray parks for the season this past Monday, and on Mon., June 16, the City of Pittsburgh follows suit, opening 16 pools. (Pools in Homewood and Sheraden remain closed during construction and maintenance projects.) All public pools offer season passes or pool tags and will greet the public into Labor Day weekend.
Pride
It’s a 40th Street Bridge kind of weekend for Pride. Starting Fri., June 13, Lawrenceville Corporation presents the third annual Lawrenceville Pride, including Friday’s small-business crawl and kickoff party and Saturday’s outdoor festival, with drag headliner Alaska Thunderf!ck; Sunday brings a drag pageant and brunch. Meanwhile, the fifth annual Pride Millvale is a free, noon to 6 p.m. event Saturday at the Millvale Food + Energy Hub, with programming focused on mutual aid and community resources.
Music
Aspinwall’s Allegheny RiverTrail Park launches its fifth annual Free Summer Concert Series with local favorites The Commonheart. The nine-piece rock and soul outfit takes to the waterfront stage Fri., June 13, complemented by food trucks and craft beer. The series continues the second Friday of each month through September, with Virginia’s Palmyra (July 13), Pittsburgh’s Sun King Warriors (Aug. 8), and local favorites Good Brother Earl with Kelsey & Co. (Sept. 12).
Dinosaurs
Dinosaur fans, it’s your day, as DinoFest returns to the Carnegie Museum of Natural History on Sat., June 14. The annual day-long showcase is for dinosaurs and the paleontologists who study them. In the shadow of the Carnegie’s iconic collection, play dino detective with fossils, try Dino Yoga, or create a coloring page inspired by fossils. Meanwhile, resident experts give talks on dinosaur coloration, megaraptorids and restoring fossil specimens. It’s free with museum admission, but advance registration is recommended.
Music
ANQWENIQUE and Friends Celebrate Juneteenth is this week’s edition of Chamber Music Pittsburgh’s Pittsburgh Performs series. Accompanied on violin, viola and piano, the versatile soprano will sing works by Black American composers including Jessie Montgomery and Nicole Mitchell. An afternoon show Sat., June 14, at East Liberty Presbyterian Church is followed by an evening performance Thu., June 16, at Downtown’s Emerald City. Admission to both is pay-what-you-wish.
Theater
Lerner & Loewe’s “Camelot” returns to the Benedum Center courtesy of Pittsburgh CLO. The classic musical based on the legend of King Arthur — and his love triangle with Lancelot and Guinevere — gets seven performances Tue., June 17, through Sun., June 22. Broadway veterans Adam Kantor and Ben Jacoby star as Arthur and Lancelot, while Guinevere is played by Kyla Stone, who was the first Black actor to play Anya in “Anastasia.”
