(TNND) — President Trump says we have “too many non-working holidays in America”, but it might be less about what he said then when he said it.
On Thursday June 19th or Juneteenth, a recognized federal holiday to commemorate the events of June 19th, 1865 when the last Black slaves of the Confederacy were ordered free following the arrival of Union troops in Galveston, Texas.
The President did not specifically name Juneteenth but said this, “Too many non-working holidays in America. It is costing our Country $BILLIONS OF DOLLARS to keep all of these businesses closed. The workers don’t want it either! Soon we’ll end up having a holiday for every once working day of the year. It must change if we are going to, MAKE AMERICA GREAT AGAIN!”
Most national banks, federal offices and the United States Postal Service were closed in honor of Juneteenth, but Trump did have his staff working at the White House.
America has 11 annual federal holidays that businesses can also choose to observe. Private companies are not forced to close on federal holidays.
Juneteenth was officially recognized as a federal holiday by Congress and signed into law by former President Joe Biden in 2021.
