LAFAYETTE, La. (NEWS 15) — Juneteenth, known as Freedom Day, is approaching, marking the historic moment 160 years ago when the last enslaved people in the US were informed of their freedom.
The Southwest Louisiana Juneteenth Committee issued a proclamation at American Legion Post 504 to honor this day. The committee emphasized the importance of educating the community about African American heritage and culture as a way to celebrate liberty.
Joseph Malbreaux from American Legion Post 504 shared his motivation for participating.
“I came here to the American Legion to assist, and help the men here who have … we have the POW and the MIAs who have given their lives here and for this country. And so, I wanted to represent and do something,” Malbreaux explained.
The committee hosts various Juneteenth events annually, including a music festival.
