This summer marks four years since Juneteenth was officially declared a federal holiday.

Otherwise known as Juneteenth National Independence Day, the holiday is associated with the end of slavery in the United States following the Civil War. That’s because on June 19, 1865, Major General Gordon Granger and his troops rode into Galveston, bringing with them General Order No. 3, a proclamation that officially ended slavery in the state of Texas.

Today, Juneteenth is an ongoing celebration of freedom and many communities across the country mark the occasion with public festivities.

Similar to any federal holiday, many government organizations close for the day or operate under special hours on Juneteenth.

Are Banks Open on Juneteenth?

Juneteenth falls on Thursday, June 19 this year. The majority of banks look to the Federal Reserve System’s holiday schedule to determine holiday closures.

According to the Federal Reserve System’s website, Juneteenth is one of 11 federal holidays the organization observes, meaning that most banks will be closed on June 19, 2025.

Of course, the majority of banks have ATM machines that are available to members even when the bank is closed. If your bank offers this service, you should be able to make a deposit or withdrawal on Juneteenth.

Online banking tends to be delayed by a day during a federal holiday, so if you plan to make any transactions on June 19, remember that it may take an extra day to clear.

The stock market tends to follow a similar schedule to banks. According to the New York Stock Exchange website, Juneteenth is one of 10 holidays that prompt NYSE markets to close.
