ATLANTA — An Atlanta Kroger is facing backlash after a viral TikTok video showed what customers found to be lackluster cookie cake decorations for Juneteenth.
In the video, which appears to have been taken at the Howell Mill Road location in Atlanta, the cakes were minimally decorated, with phrases haphazardly written on them, including “Free,” “June 19 Free,” and “Free @ Last.”
“Why even bother if you’re going to lack creativity. This is Kroger on Howell mill rd, Atlanta Ga. This is a mockery!” the video’s creator, @blaq.monalisa, wrote in the video caption on TikTok.
In the video, you can hear the woman’s comparison of Juneteenth cakes to other cakes in the grocery store.
“I wish… (there) was a manager here because y’all decorate everything else around here cute, everything else around here cute, but for Juneteenth, ‘You wanna just throw something on a freakin’ cookie cake and expect someone to buy it,”‘ she said. “This is unacceptable.”

The following day, the video’s creator said the cakes were no longer available for purchase.
11Alive has reached out to the Kroger on Howell Mill Road for a statement.
In a statement to Newsweek, a company spokesperson addressed the backlash.
“The cakes and cookies that were featured in the video were inconsistent with our provided guidance and not of the quality we would expect to see from our stores. The products have been removed, and we’ve addressed this directly with the store teams and the customer who took the initial video,” the statement read.
