BIRMINGHAM, Ala. — The Birmingham Civil Rights Institute (BCRI) has announced its Juneteenth 2025 celebrations, which will honor liberty for all Americans while celebrating Black culture and U.S. history. The events, supported by sponsors such as Encompass Health and Cricket Wireless, will culminate on Thursday, June 19, with free admission to BCRI from 11:00 a.m. to 5:00 p.m. The community is invited to explore the Institute’s historic galleries in the spirit of freedom and reflection.

Juneteenth, now recognized as both a federal and Alabama state holiday, commemorates the day in 1865 when enslaved people in Galveston, Texas, were informed of their freedom, marking the effective end of slavery in the United States. BCRI’s observance offers a meaningful opportunity for individuals and families to engage with the rich history and enduring legacy of civil and human rights in the nation.

“Juneteenth is a time to honor the resilience and contributions of African Americans throughout history,” said Tiffani Saxton, Vice President of Strategy and Engagement at BCRI. “We are thrilled to welcome the community to experience the powerful narratives within BCRI and participate in vibrant community celebrations in the Birmingham Civil Rights District.”

In addition to the free day on June 19, BCRI’s Juneteenth 2025 programming includes events leading up to the holiday. On Saturday, June 14, “Wellness Day” will prioritize health and well-being with free screenings and wellness resources from 10:00 a.m. to 2:00 p.m. On Tuesday, June 17, “A Night with Legacy,” presented by Network Navigator and powered by Prosper, will feature a fireside chat celebrating Black business excellence from 5:00 p.m. to 7:00 p.m.

BCRI will also feature a “Juneteenth Collection Spotlight,” highlighting artifacts and historic photos that tell deeper stories of freedom and resilience from June 6-28. All events are designed to foster community engagement, education, and reflection on the significance of Juneteenth and the ongoing pursuit of equality and justice.
