LANSING, Mich. (WILX) – People across the city of Lansing got together to celebrate African American heritage with Lansing’s longest Juneteenth parade.
Around 40 parade entries, including marching bands, dance teams, and local organizations, paraded from J.W. Sexton High School ending at St. Joe Park.
A member of the Lansing Juneteenth Committee shared the weight of these celebrations.
“Because on June 19th in 1865, that’s when the last group of slaves in Texas were notified, that’s about 2500 slaves who were notified that they were finally free two and a half years later,” said Delisa Fountain with the Lansing Juneteenth Committee. “So this is a time of celebration. This is a time for joy. We’re celebrating freedom and perseverance. We’re celebrating liberation. We’re celebrating persevereance and we’re celebrating what’s to come here, not just in the state of Michigan, not just in the city of Lansing, but country-wide.”
The Lansing Juneteenth celebration is the longest in Michigan, going strong for 32 years.
