Today community members in Brevard gathered to celebrate Juneteenth.

Juneteenth is recognized as the day commemorating the end of slavery in the United States. Celebrations for the holiday have been happening for over 150 years although the day was not officially recognized as a holiday until 2021.

Brevard community members came together to celebrate with combined church services, choirs, and light food to honor the holiday.

“When we have a lot of people to show up and participate with us. It shows us that we actually have come a long way and everybody is in accord with us celebrating this momentous occasion.” Victor Foster said.

The churches included in the event were Glade Creek Baptist Church, New French Broad Baptist Church and Bethel A Baptist Church

“We want to make sure that this event is recognized throughout the whole community” Foster said.

Today’s celebration was one of many throughout the week celebrating the holiday.
