Entrance to Death Valley National Park will be free on Thursday, June 19, in celebration of Juneteenth National Independence Day.

“Even though it is extremely hot, June can be a great time to visit Death Valley National Park,” said Superintendent Mike Reynolds. “It’s not crowded, the views are great, and a fantastic experience can be had!”

Park rangers recommend several precautions for a safe summer visit. Visitors are advised to avoid the heat by staying within a short walk of an air-conditioned car or hiking in the park’s cooler mountains.

They should also seek shade during the hottest part of the day, wear a hat, and consider carrying an umbrella. Drinking plenty of water and eating salty snacks are also recommended.

Travelers are urged to stick to paved roads due to limited cell phone service in the park. In case of a vehicle breakdown, staying with the vehicle is advised for shelter and easier location.

Highlights of the park that can be visited during the summer include Badwater Basin, Artists Drive, Devils Golf Course, Zabriskie Point, Wildrose Charcoal Kilns, and Dante’s View.

These sites can be accessed by a brief walk from a car.

The Furnace Creek Visitor Center offers exhibits, a park film, and a bookstore.
