A week from tomorrow, Juneteenth celebrations will kick off in New Bern. With fun events planned throughout the month to highlight and celebrate Black history. The first, free event will take place next Saturday at the slave quarters next to the airport in James City.

Less than two miles away from Coastal Carolina Regional Airport in James City lies the Crocket-Miller slave quarters. It was built in the 1830s and stands beside a gravesite where more than 500 former slaves are buried. The historic landmark will host the first event for the “Juneteenth of New Bern” celebrations.

And we had about 80 people out here last year. And to celebrate our history and our legacy.

William Hollowell is the chairman for the James City Historical Society, and will lead the slave quarters tour. Highlighting the history of former African American slaves in James City.

We tell a story of the Trent River Settlement that’s what James City was first named we have pictures of Mr. William Headley who was a runaway slave from Raleigh. He came to New Bern this bed was used in the Civil War hospital on the Confederate side.

Along with the tour the event will feature a historic display and several performances to celebrate 160 years of freedom and Black history.

Because some of that is being threatened today. So, with that threat its even more important that people come out and they become curious about their lineage.
