The Hickory Parks, Recreation & Sports Tourism Department has announced the third annual Juneteenth Festival, scheduled for June 14 from 5:30 to 9 p.m. According to the City of Hickory, the event will take place at the Samuel William Davis, Sr. Multipurpose Field, located at 730 Third Street SW, across from the Brown Penn Recreation Center.

The festival will feature live music, including a performance by the Baby Black Band, along with dance performances, children’s activities, food trucks, vendors, and community resource booths.

Sponsors of the event include Arts Culture Catawba, Target, and Legacy and Sports Development. The festival is part of a broader series of Juneteenth events hosted by Catawba County agencies and organizations throughout June.

Juneteenth, now recognized as a federal holiday, marks the day in 1865 when Union troops arrived in Galveston, Texas, to enforce the emancipation of enslaved people—over two years after the Emancipation Proclamation was issued.
