BLOOMINGTON — The Bloomington-Normal Black History Project and the City of Bloomington are bringing the annual Juneteenth celebration back to Miller Park on Saturday, June 21.

Juneteenth, also known as Freedom Day, is a federal holiday commemorating the end of slavery in the U.S.

The Bloomington event will run from 11:30 a.m. to 5 p.m., with activities including live entertainment, a children’s area, vendors, food trucks and more.

The Twin Cities’ first “Miss Juneteenth” will be announced at 2:15 p.m., and three individuals — John H. Elliott, Mboka Mwilambwe and Chemberly Harris — will be recognized at 1:30 p.m. for their contributions to their communities.

Additionally, admission to Miller Park Zoo and the putt-putt course will be free for the day.

Hundreds gathered in Bloomington’s Miller Parks for the annual Juneteenth celebration Saturday, remembering the day the last enslaved people in the Confederate South learned of their emancipation.
