COLORADO SPRINGS, Colo. (KKTV) – June 19 is Juneteenth, a time to commemorate the end of slavery in the United States.
On this day in 1865, more than 200,000 enslaved people in Texas learned they were free, two years after the Emancipation Proclamation. It’s the oldest celebration of its kind, but the nation’s youngest federal holiday.
President Joe Biden signed a law in 2021 giving the holiday its official name, Juneteenth National Independence Day. Biden credits advocates like Opal Lee, known widely as the “Grandmother of Juneteenth”, for making that happen.
11 News learned that across the country, some celebrations are scaled back this year. However, in Southern Colorado, community members are bringing these celebrations and events to the forefront, for one and all.
