JONESBORO, Ark. (KAIT) – Juneteenth was celebrated all day in Jonesboro, from the parade to the pool.
Following a vibrant parade through downtown, KLEK hosted the Juneteenth in Jonesboro Community Fair at Parker Park Community Center on Saturday, June 15.
Residents shopped from various local vendors, explored town resources, and took advantage of free health screenings offered by the New York Institute of Technology. Children enjoyed activities in the Kids Zone including a bounce house, mega cup pong, and giant Jenga.
Allie Tabor, the coordinator for Juneteenth in Jonesboro, emphasized the event’s role in spreading awareness beyond the local community.
“It is important to recognize Juneteenth because it’s important to know your history,” Tabor said. “I learned a long time ago a person who doesn’t understand their past won’t have a future and I keep that in mind.”
Later in the day, celebrations moved outdoors with a pool party at the newly opened Parker Park Swimming Pool.
An official proclamation by Jonesboro Mayor Harold Copenhaver and a firework show are happening on Juneteenth, Wednesday, June 19. The event will be held at University Lyons Park from 8:30-9:30 p.m.
