PENSACOLA, Fla. — Juneteenth will be celebrated all throughout Northwest Florida come Thursday and into the weekend.

June 19, 1865, marks the day enslaved African Americans in Galveston, Texas, were finally told they were free under the Emancipation Proclamation. To many, it’s the country’s second day of independence.

Juneteenth officially became a federal holiday when former President Joe Biden signed it into law on June 17, 2021.

Black communities, especially in Texas, had their own commemorative events before Juneteenth’s officiation. Now, it’s celebrated nationwide.
