
IOWA CITY, Iowa (KCRG) – Wednesday is Juneteeth, which celebrates the day the last remaining slaves in Texas learned they were free through the Emancipation Proclamation in 1863.
There are several events planned in Iowa City to celebrate.
On Wednesday afternoon, there will be a Juneteenth through Food and Music Evolution event.
People are invited to learn about the history and importance of Juneteenth through food as well as African American Music. There will also be trivia where you can win prizes.
It will be at the Iowa City Public Library Teen center from 3:30 p.m. to 5 p.m.
Also planned for Wednesday afternoon, Kultur Scope presents the “I Am Sacred Juneteenth Art Show and Auction.”
People are invited to enjoy art, performances, and food in room 302 at the Iowa City Senior Center from 4 p.m. to 7 p.m.
