Jasper and Bluffton will be hosting various Juneteenth events June 13-15 for the entire family. Some of the events will include live music, food trucks, and other events for the family.
There are several Juneteenth events scheduled throughout the lowcountry, including two upcoming events in Bluffton and Jasper County.
Juneteenth commemorates the emancipation of enslaved people in the United States. President Joe Biden signed legislation in 2021 making June 19 a federal holiday.
There will be a Juneteenth event in Jasper County celebrating its sixth year on June 14 from noon until 5 p.m. at 128 Mango Dr. in the Mitchellville community of Jasper County. The family festival will have vendors, a small business expo and live music for the entire family to enjoy.
The event is organized by Courteney Simmons, who said she hosts the event each year to remember what African Americans have endured and what they can achieve.
Simmons said she learned about the history of Juneteenth from her former Ridgeland Elementary School teacher Margie Kidd.
“She insisted on sharing the history with myself and others and always wanted to put together an annual event so that the history can live on,” Simmons said. “Sadly, Mrs. Kidd passed away before getting to celebrate the annual Juneteenth Celebration, located here in Jasper County. I decided to arrange something educational, positive as well as fun for the community and definitely to honor Mrs Kidd!”
Simmons said the event is free and open to the public each year.
“We welcome everyone to come out and enjoy the festival,” she said.
