The Reno community celebrated the Juneteenth holiday with a festival at Rancho San Rafael Park.

The holiday commemorates the day in 1865 when 250,000 slaves were freed in Galveston Bay, Texas, ending slavery in the United States.

Other than live local music and great food, there were resources provided for the community to utilize from Truckee Meadows Community College, the Reno Police Department and much more.

Everyone there seemed to be enjoying themselves as a community.

“Events like this really bring the black community together. We’re able to have fellowship,” said attendee Denise Davidson. “We’re able to enjoy each other. We’re able to celebrate our culture and honestly it is just a good chance to feel like a big family.”

“Just that it’s freedom you know what I’m saying?” said Attendee D’raun Manning. “So many people went through so many crazy things and now it just means you’re free and I love that.”

The official holiday is Wednesday, June 19.
