MADISON, Wis. (WMTV) – State officials and community leaders are gathering Tuesday afternoon for the raising of the Juneteenth flag at the Wisconsin State Capitol.
This is the fifth year that the flag has been raised at the Capitol.
Gov. Tony Evers, Wisconsin Legislative Black Caucus members, and other officials will be at the event.
The flag raising will take place at 1 p.m. outside of the Capitol at the King St. entrance.
The Juneteenth flag will temporarily replace the Progress Pride Flag through Wednesday at sunset, but will not replace other flags that regularly fly over the State Capitol building.
President Joe Biden signed an act that recognized Juneteenth as a federal holiday in 2021. It is formally recognized and celebrated in all 50 states and the District of Columbia. Wisconsin was the 32nd state to recognize Juneteenth, according to Evers’ Office.
