SPRINGFIELD, MA (WGGB/WSHM) – The Juneteenth Jubilee Planning Committee in Springfield hosted their fifth annual Juneteenth Jubilee flag raising ahead of Thursday’s holiday.
Juneteenth, also known as Freedom Day or Emancipation Day, commemorates the emancipation of enslaved African Americans in the United States and is a reminder that we continue to work towards freedom and equality for all.
The committee hopes to honor the history, culture, and achievements of the Black community through education, unity, and courage. “What I will also encourage you all to do is to have the courage to do it, to have the courage to fight, to realize that we stand on the shoulders of our ancestors who were great individuals. Our ancestors, who paved the way for us and allowed us to have ceremonies like this, are the ones in which we need to look to. They are our role models and they are individuals that we need to pride ourselves after,” said Justin Hurst with the Juneteenth Jubilee Planning Committee
The committee has a number of other activities planned for Juneteenth holiday including an adult day block party on Friday, June 13 and a family fun day at Blunt Park on Saturday, June 14 from 1 p.m. to 7 p.m. There will also be a Father’s Day brunch at the Dunbar Community Center from 11 a.m. to 1 p.m. on Sunday, June 15.
