Fayette County Commissioners Court signed a proclamation at their meeting last week designating June 19, 2025, as Emancipation Day in Fayette County.
Commonly known as Juneteenth, the holiday marks the day in 1865 when Major General Gordon Granger of the Union Army arrived in Galveston and ordered the freeing of the enslaved people of Texas.
Verlia Mosley Rhodes, who organizes a pre-Juneteenth Celebration every year in La Grange, was on hand for the signing. She also requested the use of the courthouse grounds for the celebration, which the commissioners unanimously approved.
“This is the 11th year we have had a pre-Juneteenth Celebration on the Square,” she said. “I hope and pray that each and every one of you will enjoy the day with us. It’s not like there’s going to be anything ugly or hateful. If you listen to that proclamation, it does stir something in you. We need to get to the point to where we appreciate each other and acknowledge what has happened and what’s going on.”
The event will take place on Saturday, June 7, from 5 to 10 p.m. Food will be served. There will also be musical entertainment, including a Zydeco band, Rhodes said.
“If you like to dance, bring some comfortable shoes,” she said. “Bring a chair and a blanket and the kids. Let’s have some fun.”
