LINCOLN, Neb. (KOLN) – Even though Juneteenth has only been a federally recognized holiday for three years, one Lincoln community center has been inviting the community to celebrate it together for over half a decade.
The street was closed outside of the F Street Community Center for their sixth annual Juneteenth celebration on Saturday. The event featured live music, t-shirts, food, 3-on-3 basketball games, and more.
The goal of the event was to encourage those in the community to not just celebrate the holiday, but celebrate it together.
“It shows love,” Mika Moss-Williams, one of the celebrations coordinator’s, said. “It shows ambition. It shows resilience, and this is why we celebrate together.”
Organizers said they plan to continue to host it annually and expand it as much as they are able, hoping to unite the community and grow the holiday more and more each year.
“The main thing is to bring out the community,” JT Taylor, with the F Street Community Center, said. “And for everyone to come together and enjoy everyone’s company.”
The celebration was planned with the help of sponsors like Spreetail Professionals of Color, many of which had vendor tents set up along the street. Other vendors included a local food bank, and a place where anyone not registered to vote could do so on the spot.
