Banks won’t be the only establishments closing their doors for the day. All government offices, including city and state courts, will be closed as well
Major bank Chase will close all of its 4,700 locations across 48 states for an entire 24 hours in a few weeks, the company confirmed. Wells Fargo is reportedly following suit.
The bank teller blackout will occur in celebration of a federal holiday in the US: Juneteenth, which is June 19. The day honors the implementation of the Emancipation Proclamation, which saw the release of the last enslaved African Americans in the US and ended slavery.
Juneteenth became a federal holiday in 2021 when former President Joe Biden ratified legislation to do so in June of that year. Hence, all major banks, including Chase, Wells Fargo, Bank of America and Citibank will be closed in recognition of the holiday. It comes as banks close hundreds of locations across the US to break historic low.

It’ll be best for Americans to plan ahead and do their banking sooner rather than later. The blackout will be for only 24 hours, so you could delay your plans too.
Banks won’t be the only establishments closing their doors for the day. All government offices, including city and state courts, will be closed as well. Social Security offices and local Department of Motor Vehicles facilities will do the same on Juneteenth. Other organizations like the stock market and branches of the New York Public Library systems will also be closed.
Postal services like FedEx and UPS will be in operation on Juneteenth, but there will be no mail delivered in New York that day. Kids and educators will have the day off as all public schools and city schools will be closed in recognition of the federal holiday. Civil servants responsible for trash, curbside compost and recycling won’t be working that day either.
All aforementioned waste will be collected the day after. A few city services will be in operation, however. The Staten Island Ferry will reportedly be running on a holiday schedule, every 30 minutes from 7 a.m. until midnight.
