An annual Juneteenth celebration by local non-profit Music Moves will return for year five in 2025.
The organization’s annual Freedom Festival is set for Saturday, June 21 at Luther George Park in Downtown Springdale.
This year’s event will include performances by Grammy nominated soul artist and singer/songwriter, MAJOR, along with hip hop artist Mike Jones, funk band ConFunkShun, along with several local and regional acts to be announced at a later date.
“Northwest Arkansas has always had a huge appreciation for art and culture, and Music Moves wanted to make sure Black art and culture is contributing to those cultural exchanges.” said Anthony Ball, Music Moves Vice President and Program Director.
Juneteenth, also known as the “African American Emancipation Day,” originated in Galveston, Texas in 1865, and is the oldest known celebration of the ending of slavery. The day was recognized as a federal holiday when president Joe Biden signed the Juneteenth National Independence Day Act in 2021.
In addition to the music, Freedom Fest will include a kid zone with games and activities, food trucks, a vendor market, and more. Organizers said the event has drawn more than 4,000 the past couple years.
The event, created through a partnership by Music Moves, The Community Cohesion Project (CCP) and the City of Springdale, will take place from around 2 p.m. until 10 p.m. It is free to attend and open to the public.
