UNITED STATES – The National Park Service is waiving entry fees at all national Parks on Wednesday in honor of Juneteenth.
June 19th is the national holiday celebrating the end of slavery in the United States. It was on that day in 1865 that the last enslaved peoples in Texas were finally freed, despite the fact that the Emancipation Proclamation was supposed to have taken effect more than two years earlier.
Juneteenth officially became a federal holiday in 2021. This year will be the first time it will be a free entry day at national parks.
Fees for parking and activities like camping and fishing, however, will remain in place.
