COVINGTON, Ky. (WKRC) – Although Juneteenth isn’t until Thursday, Northern Kentucky is starting the celebrations early.

June 19, also known as Juneteenth, is the celebration of the day that slavery ended in the United States.

The Northern Kentucky celebration began on Saturday in Covington, and included a parade that started on Greenup Street and went to Covington Landing along the Ohio River.

The organizers said that was just a small part of it.

“It’s really all about trying to help people and be a blessing to people and also to help them understand the significance of Juneteenth – we never want to lose sight of that,” one of the organizers, Richard Tyler, said.

Another parade took place on Sunday that started at Dixie Highway and Garvey Avenue in Elsmere and ended at First Baptist Church, which held a service and a picnic.
