MARQUETTE, Mich. (WLUC) – The NMU Office of Opportunity, Empowerment & People is looking to expand its community-wide programming, and they’re starting with Juneteenth.
Rather than celebrate for only one day, the office will host events all week long. The Juneteenth Week of Jubilee will feature a community picnic, a dance and drumming workshop, a community discussion and the Juneteenth festival.
Freddy Sims, the NMU Center for Community and Connection coordinator, says it’s crucial to educate the community and start a dialogue regarding Juneteenth.
“In our community, oftentimes, we don’t talk about Juneteenth,” Sims said. “A lot of folks don’t know what Juneteenth is and what it represents. So, it not only allows for that conversation to happen, but we also provide the resources for you to learn from it too.”
The group still needs vendors for the festival. If you are a maker of any kind you are welcome to reach out. Additionally, the office also needs volunteers. You must reach out by June 5 to sign up for either.
To sign up as a vendor or as a volunteer, email Juneteenth@nmu.edu or call the Center for Community and Connection at (906)227-2000.
