The North Omaha community is getting ready for the annual Juneteenth parade this weekend. The district’s newly elected city councilwoman says part of that means taking care of 24th Street. “Everybody chips in, does their part,” said District 2 City Councilwoman LaVonya Goodwin. The parade goes from 24th and Lake up to 24th and Sprague. It starts Saturday at 10 a.m. From businesses to city employees, Goodwin said the effort to prep 24th Street is a collaborative effort. “All hands on deck, just wanting to spruce up, mow lawns, trim weeds,” she said. “Clean up any excess trash, ready for all that traffic and the visitors that we will have here on Saturday.”Goodwin is also the board president of the North 24th Street Business Improvement District.”I think all of us can say it’s been hard work leading up to this moment, and so, now being able to celebrate, you know, so many transformative projects happening along the corridor, so much buy-in and engagement from the community,” she said. And Goodwin is excited for the people of North Omaha, as well as visitors to see that in real time, come Saturday.”They’re going to see a lot of progress and change. And so, again, it’s really kind of like the cherry on top of a lot of hard work,” she said. Also happening Saturday in North Omaha is the Omaha Freedom Festival. You can learn more about that here.
