PADUCAH — The Juneteenth Steering Committee in Paducah and McCracken County is seeking vendors, sponsors and volunteers for the city’s fourth annual Juneteenth Celebration.

Juneteenth was recognized as a federal holiday in 2021, but its roots go back generations. Held on June 19 each year, it commemorates the day in 1865 when Union troops arrived in Galveston, Texas, to inform enslaved people of their freedom and enforce the Emancipation Proclamation issued by President Abraham Lincoln in 1863. It’s also known as Emancipation Day, and Paducah has a similar longstanding tradition in the annual Eighth of August emancipation celebration.
