Redlands gathered to celebrate Juneteenth, the holiday marking the end of slavery in the U.S., with a community festival at Sylvan Park on Sunday, June 16.

Sponsored by Unity in the Community, the Redlands Police Department, The Village SBC, San Bernardino Valley College and the University of Redlands, the seventh annual celebration featured live performances and families enjoyed a kids’ zone and food trucks and joined a dominoes and spades tournament.

Juneteenth is a federal holiday commemorating June 19, 1865, when the last enslaved Black people in Galveston, Texas, learned of their freedom. It came more than two years after the Emancipation Proclamation was signed in 1863. The day marks the formal end of slavery after the Civil War.
