As Juneteenth approaches, Searcy is set to host a vibrant celebration this Saturday at Spring Park from 2 p.m. to 7 p.m.

The event promises a day filled with live DJs, vendors, basketball tournaments, and activities for all ages, including a fun zone and video game buses.

Committee members Roberts, Abrahams, and Bo Turner shared their excitement about the event, emphasizing the importance of community involvement.

“We’re going to have live DJs, vendors. We’re going to have basketball tournaments, Kid fun tones, video game busses, all types of things for everyone to do, just a good way to get the community out and involved,” they said.

The celebration will also spotlight Black-owned businesses, a decision the committee felt was crucial.

“I think the main thing was that not only is the celebration of Juneteenth and the freedom of African Americans but also being able to spotlight some of the businesses that may not have gotten as much attention,” they explained.

This year’s event will honor Miss Evelyn Washington, a beloved schoolteacher, and her daughter, Dr. Mitzi Washington, a well-known pediatrician.

“First, we honor our past, which will be Miss Evelyn Washington. She was a schoolteacher and service well known in the community, and the mother of this year’s honoree, which is Dr Mitzi Washington,” the committee said.

The organizers invite everyone to join the festivities, emphasizing that Juneteenth is a celebration for all.

“The main thing is that, you know, Juneteenth being African American holiday, we want to make sure that it’s not just focused, that it’s only for African Americans. The holiday is for everyone,” they said.

For those interested in supporting or participating in future events, the Searcy Juneteenth Facebook page offers opportunities to get involved.

“We want to make sure we’re honoring our past, and we know that the present is going great, but the future is going to be even better,” the committee added.

Mark your calendars for a day of fun, music, and community spirit this Saturday at Spring Park in Searcy.
