STEUBENVILLE, Ohio — During Tuesday’s city council meeting, the budget for Steubenville’s Juneteenth celebration was a key topic of discussion.
Traditionally, the event is allocated $10,000 annually. However, Mayor Jerry Barilla noted that only a little more than $3,200 was spent last year.
As a result, Barilla proposed reallocating the unspent funds, amounting to $6,700, to this year’s celebration.
“So anyway, I am suggesting that $6,775 be reappropriated to the Juneteenth,” Barilla said. “I think it is only fair that they get it. It is a national holiday.”
Council was initially divided on the proposal. After further discussion, they agreed to allocate $2,800 of last year’s unspent funds to this year’s Juneteenth celebration. This amount is in addition to the original $10,000 authorized annually for the celebrations from the mayor’s budget.
