Juneteenth 2024: How to celebrate
Juneteenth became a federal holiday in 2021. Here’s how to prep for and celebrate the important holiday.
Problem Solved
Freedom, music and community pride are taking center stage in Stroudsburg as the Juneteenth Freedom Festival makes its return on June 14 in Courthouse Square.
Now in its 23rd year, the festival promises a mix of crowd favorites and exciting new experiences.
“It’s about freedom, period,” said Cleo MeriAbut Jarvis, president of the African American Network and chair of the festival.
She emphasized that renaming the event to the Juneteenth Freedom Festival years ago and adding “Freedom” was intentional.
“When you see that name, you know exactly what we’re celebrating,” she said.
Jarvis said this year’s entertainment lineup is stacked with performances by singers, rappers, dancers, and more. Festivalgoers can also look forward to the return of cherished events like choir performances and the emotional tribute to fathers, where dads are honored with heartfelt recognition and roses.
“That’s a tearjerker,” said Jarvis. “It’s a moment where fathers are celebrated for all they do.”
And the awarding of the Juneteenth Scholarships will be taking place, with two local high school students receiving $1,500 each to support their academic journeys.
She said this festival is more than just a day of celebration; it’s a heartfelt reunion for many.
“For some people, this is the only time all year where they see old friends,” Jarvis said.
“There are hugs, laughter, dancing… it’s just beautiful.”
Running from 2 to 6:30 p.m., Jarvis added the event invites families, neighbors and visitors to gather downtown, reconnect and honor the legacy of Juneteenth in a powerful way.
