TALLAHASSEE, Fla. (WCTV) – Young girls at the Phenomenal Tresses Summer Beauty Camp in Tallahassee spent Juneteenth learning more than just hair techniques, they also explored the history and cultural significance behind the holiday.
The owner of Phenomenal Tresses, Thamar Williams emphasized the importance of using the camp as a platform for cultural empowerment.
“Juneteenth is such an amazing celebration and holiday because that is the pivotal point where our ancestors fought for our freedom,” she said. “I celebrate Juneteenth because it allows me to be free to express how I want to express.”
As part of the camp’s Juneteenth celebration, the mentees created original art pieces that represented the meaning of the day. They also learned about African-American heritage, including the deep-rooted history of braiding.
“Dating back in African culture, they used braiding styles and patterns as a way to display hierarchy,” said Williams. “Certain styles meant you were royalty. They also used different braiding styles to show if they were from a different tribe.”
Williams said her goal for the project was to educate and inspire the young girls that attened.
