AIKEN, S.C. (WRDW/WAGT) – There were multiple events in Aiken on Saturday that celebrated the Juneteenth holiday.
In Founder’s Park, people came together to honor Black culture.
The Center for African American History, Art & Culture held the event where people could watch live performances, dance, tour the museum and more.
One family said that passing down their family tradition is important.

“The connection is about family. We live on a 143-acre farm in Aiken County, and this farm was started with my grandparents and my parents following them to establish a homestead for us. We have four properties on our farm. And we’ve been growing vegetables and farming that land now for almost 100 years, and 1927 is when my grandparents bought the first 75 acres of the Bell Farm,” said Joyce Bell Winkler, celebrating Juneteenth.
New Beginning Ministries also celebrated the holiday on Silver Bluff Road.
They had a kids zone, music, water attractions and sports tournaments.

One person said it’s about reaching the community.
“We are trying to reach out to our community to celebrate unity, the Juneteenth experience. And so, this is our fourth year doing this. And each year, it gets bigger and bigger. We are excited this year that more and more people are coming out to celebrate with us,” said Terrell Presley, administrative assistant, New Beginnings Ministries.

The church says they hope to do it for years to come.
