Juneteenth events sponsors by the city of Longview as well as those organized by community groups, churches and others are planned throughout the month.
“Juneteenth in Longview is powered by the people,” said District 2 Councilwoman Shannon Moore. “This is about our neighborhoods, churches, businesses, and civic groups creating spaces to celebrate freedom, heritage and one another. The city is proud to support that spirit and amplify the incredible work already being done.”
The city will host several events June 14.
The annual Juneteenth Parade is set at 10 a.m. and will travel along Martin Luther King Jr. Boulevard from Pittman Street to Broughton Recreation Center.
Festival in the Park at Broughton Park is scheduled noon to 7 p.m., featuring food, music, children’s activities, scholarship presentations and historical information sessions.
And a Business Expo, co-hosted by Alpha Kappa Alpha Sorority, Inc., Epsilon Zeta Omega Chapter, is planned 10 a.m. to 6 p.m. at Broughton Recreation Center.
On June 19, the Juneteenth Committee will present Juneteenth in the Park at Teague Park from noon to 8 p.m. The event is “a family-friendly celebration of food, fellowship and culture,” according to the city.
In addition to the city-sponsored activities, dozens of community-led events are scheduled in June.
“These include talent showcases, theatrical performances, sports tournaments, comedy shows, pageants, worship gatherings and more — each reflecting the creativity, diversity, and dedication of Longview residents,” according to the city.
A full calendar of Juneteenth events, including contact information for each, is available at LongviewTexas.gov/Juneteenth.
“This year’s Juneteenth reflects the best of who we are as a community,” Moore said. “When neighbors come together to lift each other up and honor our shared past, everyone wins.”
