About the Holidays
Eid al-Adha, or the Feast of Sacrifice, is one of the most important Islamic holidays, commemorating the Prophet Abraham’s willingness to sacrifice his son in obedience to God. It also marks the end of the annual Hajj pilgrimage. The holiday is observed with special prayers, community gatherings, acts of charity, and time spent with family. In 2025, Eid al-Adha is expected to begin at sunset on June 6 and continue through June 9, depending on the lunar calendar.
In 2025, Eid al-Adha is expected to begin at sunset on Friday, June 6, and continue through Monday, June 9, depending on the sighting of the moon. Charles County government will observe the first day with office closures on June 6.
Juneteenth, celebrated annually on June 19, marks the day in 1865 when Union Army Gen. Gordon Granger arrived in Galveston, Texas, and announced that all enslaved people were free — more than two years after the Emancipation Proclamation. The holiday has long been celebrated in the African American community and was officially recognized as a federal holiday in 2021.
