
Hackensack celebrates Juneteenth with flag raising ceremony

Juneteenth — the federal holiday codified in 2021 that commemorates the day that the last African American slaves were told they had been freed — falls on Thursday, June 19, this year, but not every state recognizes the holiday.
According to the Congressional Research Service, at least 28 states and the District of Columbia have designated Juneteenth as a permanent paid or legal holiday.
In New Jersey however, Juneteenth is recognized as both a state and public holiday.

Federal government, banks in New Jersey will be closed on Juneteenth
Former President Joe Biden signed the Juneteenth National Independence Day Act on June 17, 2021, establishing Juneteenth as a federal holiday.
Juneteenth National Independence Day is one 12 federal holidays recognized this year.
U.S courts will be closed on Thursday, June 19 in observance of Juneteenth.
Branches of major banks, including Bank of America, Capital One, PNC and Trust will be closed on Juneteenth this year.
Will mail be delivered on Juneteenth?
The United States Postal Service confirmed its branches will be closed on Juneteenth this tear, but some shipments will be made, including Amazon same-day deliveries
FedEx and UPS will operate on normal schedules on Thursday, June 19.
Do I have to work on Juneteenth?
Only first responders and essential staff are mandated to work on Juneteenth.
Most retail outlets and restaurants will remain open, so if you work in those industries, chances are you will be clocking in on Juneteenth.
If you are a non-essential state employee, you will most likely have off, as will full-year school district employees.
Private businesses and industries can decide to celebrate Juneteenth this year or not, so it’s advisable to check with your supervisor or place of employment before making any Juneteenth plans this year.
