Columbia’s 2025 Juneteenth celebration spans four weeks of events commemorating the emancipation of enslaved people in the United States on June 19, 1865. 

That date marks when federal troops arrived in Galveston, Texas, to enforce the Emancipation Proclamation. Although the proclamation was signed more than two years earlier, it wasn’t enforceable in Confederate-controlled areas until after the Civil War.
