WINNEBAGO COUNTY, Ill. (WIFR) – Not only is June 19 Juneteenth, but it is now National Freedom Day as proclaimed by Winnebago County Board Chair Joe Chiarelli.
Chiarelli says he issues this proclamation because it’s important for everyone in the county to celebrate the holiday and learn about the history behind being free.
Tommy Meeks started the Rockford celebration 34 years ago and it is the longest-standing Juneteenth celebration in Illinois. More than 40 local and regional vendors participated this year in addition to several performances.
