ANCHORAGE, Alaska (KTUU) – Another packed schedule of performances, speeches and fun is scheduled for Juneteenth Anchorage’s 2024 celebration Saturday and Sunday at Delaney Park Strip (between E and I streets).

Several community leaders will be at the to speak along with food vendors, entertainment, a health fair and more. Juneteenth organizers say this year’s celebration will have designated rest areas for families and elders.

“I’m sleepy as a coordinator, but I’m happy for the community because I know we all worked really hard to get Juneteenth back and have this celebration,” Juneteenth Anchorage co-coordinator Jasmin Smith said. “I just want people to know it’s everybody’s event, so everybody’s welcome to come.”

Juneteenth celebrates June 19, 1865, the day African Americans on the Texas coast were freed from slavery. President Abraham Lincoln signed the Emancipation Proclamation on Jan. 1, 1863, but it took years for Union troops to deliver the news to the outskirts of the Confederacy.

Last year, the Alaska Senate passed a bill establishing as a state holiday Juneteenth, which became a federal holiday in 2021.
