Multiple Black organizations met on Thursday morning at the Historic Douglas Theater to share how they’re promoting cultural community, healing and history in Middle Georgia.
This year’s themes are “HBCU: Homecoming Edition and the Stay Woke Experience,” “The Power of Working Together,” and “The Lasting Legacy of Creativity and Sharing Stories.”
WGXA spoke with Macon Black Culture Board President Sheknita Smith, who said it’s important not to leave anyone behind in experiencing and celebrating what Juneteenth is about.
“The reason why we all came together, because it’s an opportunity for both our ancestors and those who have paved the way for us younger people that are coming behind to be able to stand, to learn, to grow together as a community,” said Smith. “It’s important that all of us as a culture, as a people, understand one another, as well as celebrate the cultural appreciation and affirmation of who we are as Black people.”
