Juneteenth events happening around Charlotte: Here’s a list

CHARLOTTE, N.C. (WBTV) – June 19 marks “Juneteenth” across the United States, and commemorates the emancipation of enslaved people.

Juneteenth was first celebrated in Galveston, Texas in 1865. More than 150 years later, Juneteenth became a federal holiday in 2021.

Celebrations are happening around Charlotte this June 19, and a list of some of those events is below:

  • Juneteenth Art Fest: Shoppes at University Place, 4-8 p.m.
  • Juneteenth Block Party: Veterans Park in Huntersville, 6-9 p.m.
  • EbonyFest Juneteenth Festival: Rotary Centennial Pavilion in Gastonia, 6-10 p.m.
  • Juneteenth Celebration: Veterans Park in Kannapolis, 12-5 p.m.
  • Juneteenth at The Gantt: Harvey B. Gantt Center, 12-4pm
  • Juneteenth Celebration: Stumptown Park in Matthews, 5:30-9 p.m.
  • Juneteenth Buy-Black Fest: The Innovation Center in Charlotte, 5-9 p.m.
  • Juneteenth Celebration: Ada Jenkins Center in Davidson, 6-8 p.m.

The list above includes just some of the events happening on Thursday; however, many more are happening around the Charlotte area.

Many towns and cities are hosting their own Juneteenth events either Thursday or this weekend.
