
HONOLULU (HawaiiNewsNow) – A Juneteenth block party kicked off at the Waikiki Shell on Thursday at 3 p.m.
The free event was open to the public and ran from 3-9 p.m.
There was live entertainment, cultural workshops and exhibits, activities for keiki, and food vendors.
Juneteenth, or Juneteenth National Independence Day, is a federal holiday celebrated annually on June 19.
It is a celebration of freedom, commemorating the end of slavery in the U.S.
June 19, 1865, was the day Maj. Gen. Gordon Granger ordered the final enforcement of the Emancipation Proclamation in Texas at the end of the Civil War.
