LITTLE ROCK, Ark. – The Arkansas Martin Luther King Jr. Commission is preparing to give back to the community in celebration of Juneteenth Wednesday.
The commission will hold a free Juneteenth food giveaway at Martin Street Church of Christ from 11 a.m. to 2 p.m. The church is located in Jacksonville at 200 East Martin Street.
Juneteenth is a newly declared federal holiday celebrated on June 19 to mark the day enslaved people in Galveston, Texas were informed of their freedom, ending slavery in the United States.
“We are thrilled to host the Juneteenth Food Giveaway as a way to give back to our community,” executive director DuShun Scarbrough said. “This event is not just about providing food; it’s about celebrating freedom, fostering unity, and supporting each other. We are committed to doing our part to ensure that everyone in our community has access to the resources they need to thrive.”
Food will be given out on a first-come, first-served basis, officials said. The commission is asking volunteers to assist with the event.
